Bluff Beach is one of the most dramatic and untouched beaches on Isla Colón. It lies on the island’s more exposed coast and feels wide, open, and raw, with jungle behind the beach and uninterrupted ocean in front.
The beach stretches for more than 4 km, giving it a very spacious and natural feel.
Bluff Beach is recommended more for its atmosphere, scenery, and sense of space than for swimming. It works especially well for long beach walks, relaxing in the sun, watching the waves, and enjoying a quieter side of Isla Colón.
Because the beach is so long and open, there are often very few people, and it is common to feel like you have a large part of the beach almost to yourself.
There are also a few bars, restaurants, and hotels along the beach if you want to stop somewhere for food or drinks, including:
Bluff Beach is also known as one of the stronger surf areas around Bocas del Toro and is therefore especially suited to experienced surfers.
At the same time, it has important ecological value, as leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles nest here during the season.
Swimming is generally not recommended at Bluff Beach during much of the year, as big waves and rip currents can make the water dangerous, even when it looks manageable from the shore.
From August to October, the sea is usually gentler, and swimming is possible.
Bluff Beach is mainly recommended for its natural setting, open coastline, and relaxed beach atmosphere. It is also a very good place to bring your own food and enjoy a long, unhurried day in the sun.
Bluff Beach can be reached from Bocas Town by taxi, colectivo, bike, scooter, or car. The ride usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
A taxi usually costs around $15–20 for up to 4 people, depending on the time of day and how far along the beach you want to go.
The colectivo costs around $3.50 per person to Bom Bom Beach Bar, which sits roughly around the middle of the beach and near the end of the colectivo route.
Bikes are possible for active visitors, while scooters and cars make access easier.
