Byebye Lionfish is a local project focused on protecting the reefs around Bocas del Toro.
They work with local fishermen, buying lionfish that are caught in the area and turning them into products like jewelry and food. The idea is simple: reduce an invasive species while supporting the local community.
The jewelry is the highlight.
Each piece is made from real lionfish fins, shaped into bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and more. Every item is unique and directly connected to reef protection.
It’s the kind of piece you take home and actually remember where it came from.
Lionfish don’t belong in the Caribbean — they were introduced by humans and spread rapidly.
They reproduce extremely fast and eat thousands of small reef fish every year, which puts serious pressure on the ecosystem.
By removing lionfish from the ocean and turning them into products, the project helps protect reefs while creating income for local fishermen.
You can find Byebye Lionfish products across several spots in Bocas del Toro:
They also have a small stand at: Amaranto Café from Thursday to Saturday, 6–10 PM.
In some restaurants around Bocas, you can also find lionfish on the menu — sometimes as ceviche or even sushi.
