Why This Hike

The name means "Iguana Face Hill," and whether you see the resemblance from town is up for debate. What isn't debatable is the view: the summit sits at 898 meters, jutting out directly over El Valle, and from up there the crater makes complete sense. The town sits at the bottom of an almost perfect circle of mountains, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Pacific in the other direction. This is the sunset hike. Locals come up with picnics and sit on the benches, and on a clear evening you'll have company.

Where the Trail Starts

From the main road through town, turn onto Calle la Planta near Bodhi Hostel, keep going straight past the Butterfly Garden, and the road becomes Calle Central. Follow it as it curves and climbs, turning to gravel along the way, until you reach a large green sign reading "Área Protegida Reserva Hídrica Cerro Cara Iguana." There's a small yellow cabin at the entrance with route maps and trail information posted, and a set of wooden stairs behind it that takes you up onto the trail proper.

The walk from town to that entrance takes about 20 minutes. If you'd rather skip it, a taxi drops you at the cabin, which cuts most of the journey time. Driving all the way to the upper parking area needs 4x4 or high clearance, so most people park lower and walk the gravel.

The Trail, Section by Section

From the wooden stairs it's a straightforward climb to the grassy plateau at the top, roughly an hour from the entrance. There are benches at the main viewpoint, and this is where everyone gathers for sunset.

Here's the local move: if the main viewpoint feels crowded, walk back slightly and climb one of the neighboring hilltops. The view is just as good and you'll likely have it to yourself. There's also a second lookout a short descent and climb further along the ridge, marked as "View over El Valle" on OpenStreetMap-based apps like AllTrails or Maps.me.

A longer loop along the crater rim connects to this viewpoint, around 8 to 9 km. If you do it, go counter-clockwise so you finish by descending the gravel road: it's steep and dull, and much better going down at dusk than up.

Good to Know

  • Bring a headlamp or charged phone if you're staying for sunset. The road has no lighting, and hikers regularly report losing the path on the way down in the dark.
  • Leave the viewpoint earlier than feels necessary. Light goes fast here.
  • It gets genuinely windy at the top, and the edge is exposed. Stay back from it on windy days, and skip the summit entirely if there's lightning around.
  • Slippery when wet, and it rains here even in dry season.
  • Fireflies sometimes appear on the walk down after dark, which catches people off guard in the best way.
