The entrance on Calle la Planta
This is the one wildlife stop in El Valle that asks for no planning, no taxi and no luck. On a sunny morning the netted garden is busy with butterflies, up to sixteen local species depending on the season, and if you stand still for a minute one will usually land on you. Kids tend to leave reluctantly. So do plenty of adults.
The garden is small. Walked briskly, it takes under a minute, though almost nobody walks it briskly. Staff point out what's flying that day and sometimes shake a plant gently to bring butterflies out of the leaves. Near the exit there's a short video on the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, simple enough for kids, and a display where you can watch caterpillars and chrysalises up close before you leave.
One thing to time right: butterflies go still when it rains and stay quiet for a while after. On a wet morning the garden looks emptier than the photos, through no fault of the garden. If the sky is grey, do the market first and come back once the sun is out.
