Best Coiba Tours: Snorkeling, Diving & Camping (2026)

Snorkeling, diving, and multi-day adventures from Santa Catalina

Why Coiba National Park Is Worth the Trip

Coiba was a prison island until 2004. For most of the 20th century, almost no one but inmates and guards set foot here — which is largely why the reefs, forests, and shark populations look the way they do today. UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 2005.

Everyone visiting the park does it the same way: by boat from Santa Catalina. What differs is what you do once you get there — snorkel, dive, or stay longer. This guide walks through all three.

Quick facts about visiting Coiba National Park: trip types (snorkeling, diving, multi-day trips), boat time of 1 to 1.5 hours from Santa Catalina, $20 park entrance fee paid in cash, best season December to April, and boat-only access with no direct flights.

Snorkeling in Coiba National Park

This is how most people experience Coiba: a full-day boat trip with three snorkel stops, no certification needed. Several operators run essentially the same route from Santa Catalina, at different price points and comfort levels.

A TYPICAL DAY

Meet-up, around 7:30am — gear gets handed out and fitted at the operator's office or dock.

↓

Boat ride, about 1 hour — dolphins show up often enough that guides half-expect them.

↓

Ranger station stop — a small museum, a short walk, and a rundown of the island's history as a penal colony until 2004.

↓

Three snorkel stops — not the same three for every boat; guides read the current that day and choose accordingly.

↓

Beach lunch, around midday — usually the same beach several tour groups land on around the same time.

↓

Return to Santa Catalina — typically back around 4–5pm.

Diving in Coiba National Park

Diving works differently — smaller boats, certified guides, and two to three tanks instead of three snorkel stops. Panama Dive Center and Scuba Coiba are the two names that come up most consistently, with prices starting around $155 for two dives.:

  • Best season: December–April for the clearest visibility; sharks and rays are seen year-round.
  • Whale sharks: occasionally spotted, most often around full moon in dry season — never guaranteed.
  • Best operators: Panama Dive Center and Scuba Coiba, both offering day trips and multi-day packages.

Multi-Day Trips & Camping in Coiba

Coiba can also be a multi-day trip rather than a single long day. Premier Coiba Tours runs camping expeditions on the islands, combining snorkeling with hiking — the Monkey Trail on the main island is a common stop. Fluid Adventures Panama takes a different approach entirely, pairing sea kayaking with snorkeling and camping over three to five days.
