About Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is a group of islands off Panama's Caribbean coast, and most of what matters here sits within a short ride of Bocas Town.

Isla Colón holds the town itself, with restaurants and bars clustered along a handful of streets near the water taxi dock. Isla Bastimentos and the smaller cays are only reachable by boat, which shapes how people plan a day here more than anything else. This guide gets updated as places open, close, or change their hours between seasons.

Things To Do

Most things to do in Bocas del Toro involve water — boat tours to remote beaches, surf sessions at Bluff or Paunch, and snorkeling trips to coral gardens off Bastimentos.

Beaches range from a 10-minute bike ride from town to half-day boat excursions. Surf season peaks December through March, though small waves break year-round for beginners. Tour operators in Bocas Town run standard island-hopping routes, and most can adjust based on weather, which shifts fast during the rainy months.

Food & Drinks

Bocas Town has the densest cluster of restaurants and bars on the islands, with kitchens opening around midday and winding down by 10pm — a few stay open later on weekends.

Seafood dominates menus, and the daily catch often depends on what came in that morning. Waterfront spots fill fastest at sunset, while smaller places a block inland stay quieter and cheaper. Bars cluster along two streets near the dock, and which one fills up depends on the night of the week.

Get Around

Getting around Bocas del Toro means combining land taxis on Isla Colón with water taxis to every other island — there are no roads between the main islands.

Water taxis run from the main dock in Bocas Town to Bastimentos, Solarte, and Carenero throughout the day, with frequency dropping after dark. Land taxis operate on fixed fares rather than meters, and the town center itself is walkable in under 15 minutes. Bikes and scooters are the common rental for reaching beaches on the far side of Isla Colón.

Essentials

Bocas Town has the essentials covered — supermarkets, pharmacies, a clinic, and ATMs — but stock runs lower and prices run higher than mainland Panama since most goods arrive by boat.

ATMs occasionally run out of cash on busy weekends, and card payment is common in restaurants but not on the outer islands. SIM cards are available at a couple of shops in town, and signal drops noticeably away from Isla Colón. Power cuts happen during heavier rain, and most guesthouses are prepared for it.
