Sunday market stalls in the main square of El Valle de Antón

El Valle Sunday Market

El Valle's market opens every day, but Sunday morning is the real event: crafts, plants and local sweets joining the produce, with vendors in from the surrounding hills. Right in the town center, best before 10am.

Why Go

Sunday morning is when El Valle is most itself. Vendors drive in from the surrounding communities, the produce stalls get joined by crafts, plants and trays of local sweets, and half of Panama City seems to wander through before lunch. If your trip includes a Sunday, build the morning around it.

What to Expect

Despite the name everyone uses, the market runs daily. Midweek it's a produce market, honest and useful but compact: fruit, vegetables, a few plant stalls. Sunday is the full spread, and it's a different place. Handwoven baskets, orchids and garden plants, hot food, and the slow shuffle of a crowd that's in no hurry.

Prices lean higher than markets elsewhere in Panama, and vendors will test what a visitor is willing to pay. A little friendly haggling is normal here; paying the first number quoted is not required. Small bills help, because change for a twenty is never guaranteed.

Getting There

  • On foot: It's on the main street in the town center. If you're in El Valle at all, you'll walk past it.

Good to Know

  • On Sunday, go before 10am. The tour buses from the capital arrive around then, and the best of the crafts and produce goes early.
  • Midweek visitors should temper expectations: it's a produce market then, not the craft market from the photos.
  • Cash only at most stalls.
