1. Understanding the Seasons

Swimming conditions in Bocas change a lot throughout the year:

Surf season (December to April)

  • Waves and currents increase, especially on exposed beaches. Swimming can become difficult or unsafe in many areas.

Calmer months (August to October, often into November)

  • Conditions are usually flat and protected, making many beaches ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

2. Where to Swim During Surf Season (Dec–Apr)

If you're visiting during surf season, it's important to choose protected spots:

Boca del Drago & Starfish Beach

  • Calm, shallow, and protected — some of the most reliable swimming spots
  • Avoid weekends if possible, as they get very busy
  • Check out the KUNO recommendation for more details or explore available tours to this area

Carenero (waterfront spots)

  • Places like Aqua Lounge, Leaf Eaters, and Bibi’s allow direct access to the water
  • Often still swimmable even when other areas are rough
  • Always watch for boats and changing conditions

Zapatilla Islands

  • Some of the best swimming conditions in all of Bocas
  • Calm, clear, Caribbean-style water — ideal for swimming and snorkeling
  • Typically reached by boat tour or private charter
  • Check out the KUNO recommendation for more details or explore available tours to this area

Floating bars near Bocas Town (Boya de Vida, Floating Bar)

  • Great for jumping into deeper, calmer water
  • Usually less affected by waves than open beaches

Blue Coconut (Isla Solarte)

  • Clear, calm water and often good swimming conditions, even in this season
  • Avoid during Filthy Friday if you prefer a quieter experience
  • Check out the KUNO recommendation for more information

Red Frog Beach (Bastimentos)

  • Beautiful and accessible, but can be too rough for swimming during surf season
  • Always check conditions and flag warnings
  • Check out the KUNO recommendation for more details

👉 In general: choose sheltered locations or boat-access spots.

3. Where to Swim During Calm Season (Aug–Oct)

During these months, most of the surf-season spots remain good options — plus many additional beaches that are otherwise too rough:

Boca del Drago & Starfish Beach

Carenero (waterfront spots)

  • Easy water access and generally calm conditions
  • Great for relaxed swimming close to town

Bluff Beach

  • Can become flat, shallow, and ideal for swimming
  • One of the most beautiful beach settings during calm months
  • Check out the KUNO recommendation for more details

Red Frog Beach, Polo Beach & Wizard Beach (Bastimentos)

  • Much better conditions than in surf season
  • Great for combining beach time with short hikes
  • Check out the KUNO recommendations for each location: Red frog beach, Polo Beach

Blue Coconut & boat-access spots (e.g. tours)

  • Excellent water clarity and calm conditions
  • Often included in island-hopping or snorkeling tours

👉 Even in this season, always check conditions before entering the water.

4. Bluff Beach (Important Warning)

Bluff Beach is NOT safe for swimming during surf season.

Strong waves and powerful currents make it very dangerous, and people drown here every year.

During calmer months (especially Aug–Oct), conditions can become flat and beautiful — but you should still stay cautious and observe the conditions carefully.

Good to Know

  • Conditions can change quickly — always check waves and currents before entering the water
  • Even when it looks calm, rip currents can still be present
  • If unsure, choose protected areas like Boca del Drago or boat-access spots
  • Many beaches have no lifeguards or safety infrastructure
