Mamá Nivia's sits right on the main road but is easy to miss — a small house that doesn't look like a restaurant until you're standing right in front of it. Nivia runs the kitchen herself, sourcing straight from local fishermen and farmers, and the whole place has a family-run, home-cooked warmth to it.
The passion fruit sauce is the signature here, homemade and ladled over everything from lobster to pork chops to red snapper. Whole fried fish with patacones, octopus with garlic, and langostinos come up again and again too. Order the papaya, pineapple, or passionfruit juice on the side — all fresh-squeezed.
It's simple and unpretentious rather than polished, and the kitchen has been known to send out a free bowl of chicken soup if you look like you need it. Service can be slow on a full night, so build in time — it's worth the wait.
