Hikes, adventure tours, waterfalls, hot springs and the Sunday market, with prices and tips
El Valle sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano, about two hours from Panama City, and almost everything worth doing is close to town. You can walk to the market, the butterfly garden and the orchid nursery, take a short taxi to the hot springs and the zoo, and reach most trailheads within 20 minutes. The valley is cooler than the coast, so a full day outdoors is comfortable.
This guide starts with the hikes, then covers adventure tours, waterfalls, hot springs, the market and wildlife. Each section links to the full guide for that place, and the tours can be booked online with pickup in town.
Two days is enough for most of this list. With one day, do a hike in the morning and the hot springs in the afternoon. Each extra day adds one bigger outing.
If you have one day
Morning: La India Dormida, about 2 hours. On a Sunday, do the market first and the hike after.
Lunch in town.
Afternoon: Pozos Termales.
With a second day
Adventure: the go-kart in the morning, or the zipline together with Chorro El Macho.
Afterwards: an easy wildlife stop.
With a third day
A longer outing: Pozo Azul for swimming (best from January to March), or Cerro Gaital on a dry day.
Last evening: Cerro Cara Iguana for sunset.
Hikes in El Valle de Antón
There are trails for every level, and all of them start close to town. La India Dormida is the one most people do first: about two hours to an open ridge with the whole crater below you. Cerro Cara Iguana is the easy sunset option, a wide gravel road up to a grassy plateau. Cerro Gaital is the hardest, a steep, muddy climb through cloud forest that you should only do when it's dry. For sunrise, the walk up Cerro La Silla only works with a guide.
The sunrise walk to the Cerro La Silla viewpoint is private and guided only. You're picked up in El Valle before dawn and walk up by headlamp in time for first light. It takes about 2 hours and is rated easy.
Cerro La Silla Sunrise Hike (Private)
A private sunrise hike to the Cerro La Silla viewpoint, with pickup in El Valle before dawn, headlamps and a local guide. The guide drives you to the trailhead and back.
Most adventure activities in El Valle run from town with pickup included, so you don't need your own car. Four are worth knowing about: an off-road go-kart ride, a guided e-bike tour, a zipline over a waterfall and a UTV trip to a hidden waterfall.
Our pick for something different: the off-road go-kart tour with Ride Me. You drive the kart yourself on dirt trails above town, a guide leads the way, and pickup in El Valle is included. Ride Me also runs several of the other guided trips in this guide.
Off-Road Go-Kart Tour
Quick facts
Duration
About 1.5 hours in total
Included
Kart, helmet, goggles, water, guide (English or Spanish) and round-trip transfer
Requirements
Good physical shape
You get picked up in El Valle and sit through a short safety talk, then drive an off-road go-kart yourself behind a guide along dirt trails in the hills around town, with a few stops at viewpoints. Wear clothes that can get dirty and bring sunscreen and insect repellent. It's not suitable for pregnant women or anyone with back or heart problems.
Off-Road Go-Kart Adventure (Ride Me)
Drive an off-road go-kart along dirt trails in the hills around El Valle, with a guide, a safety briefing and stops at viewpoints. Pickup in town is included.
E-bike, helmet and safety gear, snacks, water, entry to La Piedra Pintada
Requirements
Able to ride a bike, minimum 150 cm
A private guided ride around the valley at your own pace, with a guide in English or Spanish. Possible stops include La Piedra Pintada, the Cerro Cara Iguana area and the market. The route is adjusted to the group, so it works for riders who haven't spent much time on a bike, but you do need to know how to ride one.
Guided E-Bike Tour: Discovering El Valle de Antón
Ride a premium e-bike through El Valle with a local guide: viewpoints, a snack stop and La Piedra Pintada. Helmet, snacks and water included.
A guided climb of about 20 minutes through the forest takes you to the first platform, and the ziplines bring you back down past Chorro El Macho, with the 35-meter falls in view on the gorge crossing. The full course takes 2 to 3 hours (last tour around 3pm) and costs around $53 to $65, so confirm at the gate. A shorter single-line version is about $20. It shares an entrance with the waterfall, so the two make an easy half day.
If you want a waterfall most visitors never see, a guided UTV trip leaves from El Valle for the Villa Tavida waterfall. You ride there, swim in natural pools and walk a few short jungle trails. Pickup, tickets and snacks are included, the trip takes about 4 hours, and the group is capped at 10 people.
Villa Tavida Waterfall UTV Adventure
A guided UTV ride from El Valle to the Villa Tavida waterfall, with time to swim in natural pools and walk short jungle trails. Pickup, tickets and snacks are included.
Chorro El Macho is the easy one, a short flat walk you can do in flip-flops. Pozo Azul takes half a day and ends with a swim.
Chorro El Macho
A 35-meter waterfall at the end of a flat, paved walk through the forest, about 20 to 30 minutes and 1.5 km round trip, with two hanging bridges and a swimming pool along the way. Entry is $5, and the pool costs extra. It's easy enough for flip-flops or small kids. The zipline starts at the same entrance, so the two combine into a half day.
Pozo Azul, also known as Las Pailas: most of the effort is getting there.
A row of clear blue pools and small waterfalls in the hills, about an hour from El Valle. The road is rough with almost no signs, and the last stretch needs a 4x4, so most people go with a tour. From the entrance it's only about ten minutes down a staircase to the water, easy as far as the lower pools. Entry is $1 to 2 in cash. Bring shoes with grip, because the rocks are slippery, and go on a weekday if you'd like it quieter. The pools are at their best from January to March.
Hot Springs and Sunday Market in El Valle de Antón
Both are in or next to town. Do the market in the morning and the hot springs after a hike.
El Valle Sunday Market
The market runs every day, but Sunday morning is the real event, with crafts, plants and local sweets next to the produce stalls. Midweek it's a compact produce market. On a Sunday, go before 10am, because the tour buses from the capital arrive around then. Bring small bills: most stalls are cash only.
Most people come here after a hike. The water is warm rather than hot, around 28°C, so go expecting a soak in the forest and not a steaming spring. Entry is $6 to 8, and the mud mask is sometimes extra. It's a simple local facility with changing rooms, not a polished spa. Weekday mornings are the quiet window, and weekends bring families up from Panama City, sometimes by the busload. Bring a towel and a swimsuit.
Coming from Panama City and short on time? A guided day trip covers the transfer, a guided hike, lunch in El Valle and optional stops, so there is no car to rent and no bus schedule to plan around. This one takes about 9 hours and is limited to 6 people. If you'd rather go on your own, the practical guide covers the bus and driving options.
Day Trip from Panama City with India Dormida Hike
Day trip from Panama City: hotel pickup, a guided hike, lunch in El Valle and optional stops. Up to 6 people.
